In order to maximize the small amount of allotted time for press conferences at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes combined its time with Smart to show one big brand building image that included old cars, new cars and even a concept.

Mercedes started out the day with a brief introduction from the man, the myth, the moustache, Dr. Zetsche. A 1904 Simplex was used to demonstrate the basis for modern cars with a long wheelbase, wide stance and low center of gravity. Not only does Mercedes lay claim to inventing the car, it gave it its modern form.

It was after an announcement that the e-cell SLS AMG electric supercar will go into to production in 2013 that the real awesomeness commenced. A band lead by a scorching keytar player blasted Swiss synth-pop through the expo center while the Smart Forspeed electric concept was driven on stage. The lightweight concept uses the same drivetrain as Smart’s current electric offerings, using a 40-horsepower motor and 16.5-Kw-hour lithium-ion battery pack. With lower power consumption the Forspeed is capable of taking a charge large enough for 60-miles of travel in only 45 minutes. The Forspeed is set to go into production in 2012, but with a roof.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is headed to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show for its public debut, but before that happens and thanks to a broken embargo in Europe, we’ve got photos of the new C-Class ahead of its official reveal.

Changes to the exterior of the car are extremely minor, limited almost entirely to the front and rear fascias. The front fascia receives a new headlight treatment, with a two-tiered design nearly identical to those seen on the new CL. The grille is slightly reshaped as are the lower air intakes, the fenders flares look to have been reduced, and the rear bumper is slightly lower. New, modern wheels complete the exterior revisions.

The interior of the 2012 C-Class is an entirely different story as it has been thoroughly redesigned. It now features the same angular design theme being applied across Mercedes’ lineup and now found in the S-, CLS-, E-, and CL-Classes. The new C-Class features inverted vents compared to the rest of the lineup. The big news though is that the navigation unit is no longer a pop-up unit, but is rather built right into the dash and nestled under a sun-shielding hood.

Mercedes-Benz has yet to put its 2012 CLS-Class on sale here in the U.S., but we’ve already driven it, and the CLS63 AMG variant just debuted at the 2010 L.A. auto show. Not surprisingly, the tuners are right behind. German tuning house Carlsson has developed a tuning package that amps-up the exterior and interior, provides more oomph for its European-spec powertrains, and adds several suspension upgrades to boot.

The Carlsson tuning package starts with the basics: lowered suspension and an exterior enhancement package. Exterior enhancements include a front lip spoiler that can be crafted from carbon fiber and left bare, lowered side sills (which can also be made out of carbon fiber), and a modified rear fascia complete with diffuser. Buyers can also choose between 19- and 20-inch Carlsson wheels in three different colors. These touches, along with a new hood with dual powerdomes, lend the CLS a much more aggressive stance.

Mercedes has just unveiled a new fully electric and emissions-free version of its SLS AMG flagship supercar, delivering 526-hp and a 0-60 mph time of just 4.0 seconds. To achieve this impressive output, the SLS AMG E-Cell is bursting with batteries, which are placed in the front firewall, center tunnel and behind the seats. This is possible thanks to the use of lithium-polymer technology that allows for a more flexible battery structure.

Power is then transmitted to the wheels (all four of them) via electric motors at each corner. In total, the vehicle’s output is rated at 526-hp and 649 ft-lbs of torque. The new electric layout did, however, mean that Mercedes engineers had to redesign the front suspension, tossing the double-wishbone setup with a new multi-link arrangement and push-rod dampers.

Other highlights include a front splitter that can be controlled from the cockpit, through a new (and very large) AMG Drive Unit screen that also controls other aspects of the car, while giving updates on the flow of power to each wheel.

With a revised exhaust and ECU putting out 620 horsepower rather than the stock 563, the SLS gets a pretty decent power bump, but the owners are likely the type to need to show the world that they spent big money on upgrades. Kircherer gives them what they want with a matte black vinyl wrap, a front spoiler and rear diffuser, adjustable suspension and big 20″ wheels.

Shortly after introducing the SLS AMG last year, Mercedes-Benz announced that it was also developing a battery electric version of the gull-wing supercar. The first prototype is now ready to be shown to the world, resplendent in bright yellow paint (AMG Lumilectric Mango to be exact – the Mopar Boys would be proud). The SLS E-Cell is propelled by a quartet of electric motors with the pair at each axle integrated with reduction gears to drive all four wheels.

Those motors, which top out at a screaming 12,000 rpm, combine to apply 526 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque to the wheels – sufficient to push the coupe to 60 miles per hour in just four seconds. The installation of the front motors necessitated the replacement of the double-wishbone suspension with a multi-link setup with push-rod dampers.

The lithium polymer batteries are split between the center tunnel and a box mounted behind the cockpit, and can provide a combined output of 480 kilowatts (643 horsepower). Two separate cooling circuits can manage the temperature of the battery packs and related power electronics by either heating or cooling the units as needed.

The Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG is the most potent version of the German automaker's C-Class sedan. The car delivers a whopping 457 horsepower, putting it comfortably ahead of BMW's all-new M3. With that amount of performance on tap, and a price to match the M3, Mercedes looks to steal at least a few sales away from its cross-country rival.

In typical AMG fashion, the C63 features large performance-oriented tires and wheels, an aggressive bodykit, a much sportier interior, and suspension and chassis improvements.

Unlike the M3’s small displacement V8, the C63 uses a big 6.2L V8. The C63’s powerplant is good for 443 lb-ft of torque and 457 horsepower. The torque curve of the engine is just as impressive as its output: from 2000 to 6250 rpm the driver always has more than 360 pound-feet on tap �' ideal for powerful acceleration in any engine speed range.

The sprint to 62 mph takes a scant 4.5 seconds according to Mercedes -- and that's likely a conservative estimate: real world acceleration is typically even quicker than claimed times.

Maximum torque of 443 pound-feet comes at 5000 rpm. The torque curve is equally impressive: from 2000 to 6250 rpm the driver always has more than 360 pound-feet on tap -- ideal for powerful acceleration in any engine speed range.

A new seven-speed AMG automatic transmission with paddle shifting provides a wide range of driving modes. The different modes are "S" (Sport), " C" (Comfort) and "M" (Manual). Gearshifts in "S" mode are around 30 percent faster than in "C", and no less than around 50 percent faster in "M" mode.

The C 63 AMG owes its outstanding handling dynamics to the AMG sports suspension and an all-new three-link front axle design. The stiff configuration of the springs and gas-pressure shock absorbers ensures optimal road contact and low body movements when negotiating serpentine bends at speed.

The new front axle has a 35-millimetre wider track �' visible by the more widely flared wheel arches �' and therefore ensures lower dynamic wheel loads when cornering.

The front brakes have size 360 x 36-millimeter discs with six-piston fixed callipers, while deceleration at the rear is handled by 330 x 26-millimeter discs with four-piston fixed callipers.

The Electronic Stability Program offers a variety of settings. In "ESP ON" mode, the onset of handling instability leads to braking intervention at one or more of the wheels, accompanied by a reduction in engine torque. Briefly pressing the ESP key activates "ESP SPORT". In this mode the braking intervention to counter oversteer or understeer, as well as the accompanying reduction in engine torque, allows a higher dynamic threshold. Prolonged pressure on the ESP key activates "ESP OFF," whereby there is no intervention.

Pricing

There is no doubt that Mercedes-Benz is squarely taking aiming at BMW's M3 with its all-new C63 AMG Sedan, and that rivalry will be reflected in the car's price. Mercedes has announced that its C63 AMG will come with a base sticker price of $53,800 -- the exact same price of entry for BMW's M3 sedan.

Minutes after Danny the horse and I posed for this picture, the men from Mercedes came and collected their lovely new motor and I got in my own car to head to London for an important meeting. It wouldn't start.

So I cadged a lift to the station, where at this precise moment I'm sitting on a bench at the end of the platform like some lunatic trainspotter, with my shoes covered in horse dung, my hair coated in diesel dust and my brand new Tom Ford suit streaked with pigeon poop from the canopy overhead that's supposed to stop things dripping on you. I've written this column from some grim places, but this takes the mick.

Still, as all the trains are delayed, it's as good a time as any to crack on. So, why the horse? Well, originally, a cabriolet - from the French cabrioler, meaning to caper (thanks, Google) - was a light, two-wheeled carriage that could be pulled fast by a single horse, making it the best way of getting around a large town. 'Cab', as in taxi, is an abbreviation of the word. So 200 years ago, Danny here would have been pulling the cabriolet.

I don't think he could pull this one, though, big boy though he is. You can probably tell I'm keeping my distance. I don't do horses. Horsepower, yes - horses, no. I like them, but I don't think they like me. If you had the chance to lounge around in a field all day, eating grass with all the lady horses, I don't think you'd be much impressed by some 14-stone Yorkshireman trying to hitch a ride on your back. I went on a horse once when I was younger, and within ten seconds I was on my back looking at the clouds with my spine lodged in my throat. It was three days before my lungs worked properly. Nope, it's definitely not for me.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG sedan has been released along with the first batch of official photos. The E63 AMG now makes 518bhp (386kW) and 465lb ft (630Nm) of maximum torque compared to the current car's 507bhp (378kW) and the same amount of torque. Mercedes-Benz is sticking AMG's 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 on this one. Performance should be similar to that of the outgoing E63 with figures of 4.5 seconds for the 0 - 62mph sprint and a top speed of 155mph (249km/h).

Despite the minimal increase in power the car is said to quaff 12 percent less fuel resulting in an average consumption of 22.4mpg. One of the components credited for this is the Speedshift MCT 7-speed gearbox found in the SL63 AMG. It has four driving modes namely Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual.

The standard car comes wearing 18-inch AMG alloys with size 255/40 front and 285/35 rear tyres. There is an optional 19-inch rim available. In terms of exterior cosmetics the big AMG gets LED daytime running lights, a more aggressive front spoiler, a rear diffuser and four tailpipes as per current AMG standard issue.

At £36,415 the E-Class E250 Sport estate isn't exactly cheap. And even the least expensive model, the E200 SE at £29,875, is a bit strong.

Get a Sl65 AMG, ditch off the power folding hardtop for a fixed roof made of carbon fiber. Put in bigger mesh lower intakes and vents behind the wheels. Add in as well carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the body panel. Now, we’ve got the 2010 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series.

Although the Black Series share the same twin-turbo 6.0 Liter V12 with the SL65 AMG, it has bigger turbos and increased cooling capacity to produce 662 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque.

The Black Series also features 5-speed automatic transmission with manumatic shifting. And instead of the SL65 AMG’s electricity-draulic brake-by-wire system, the Black Series uses a conventional vacuum-assisted hydraulic unit.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd expects the improving market landscape and launch of new car models to drive sales of its passenger cars to over 4,000 units next year.

President and chief executive officer Peter Honegg said next year’s passenger car market was projected by the Malaysian Automotive Association to be better than this year.

“We were very fearful at the beginning of the year and would have been happy to do what we did in 2007, which was selling 3,600 passenger cars,” he said during the media launch of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class yesterday.

He said the company sold 4,200 passenger cars last year and planned to sell between 200 and 300 units more than its initial target of 3,600 units this year.

Honegg said Mercedes-Benz currently held about 43% in the luxury car segment and it aimed to improve its position “a little” next year.

“There are more competitors coming in but we try to maintain the leading position in this segment,” he said.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class to officially launched today would be available in three variants, with the starting retail price of RM455,888 (on-the-road without insurance).

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia vice-president of sales and marketing for passenger cars Florian Mueller said the company aimed to sell more than 1,500 units of the newly-launched E-Class sedan cars next year.

The company has received over 600 bookings for the new cars.

The Mercedes Sport-Leicht (SL) has carved itself an enviable niche, despite being neither light nor particularly sporty. Since the launch of the original in 1957, Mercedes has sold more than 633,000 SLs.

The R230 model of the SL that Mercedes-Benz introduced in 2001 has become the best-selling SL in history, and the U.S. accounts for more than half of its total worldwide sales. There was a time when the SL existed outside Mercedes' normal model program and such sales success might lead to years of continued production. After all, the R107 version continued almost unchanged from 1971-'89.

But in today's fad-crazed world, change is an obligation, not an option, so the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL arrives with a significant face-lift. The most obvious alterations are aesthetic, but there are also subtle revisions to the interior and the mechanical package. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL550 and 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL600 reach U.S. showrooms in mid-May.

Back to the Future
Maybe it's a good thing the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL has changed. The understated and even slightly effeminate lines of the outgoing SL have been given a dramatic overhaul. The new nose is more aggressive and masculine, even strident. In ushering in this change, Mercedes is trying to blend styling cues from its current lineup — note the similarity of the new headlamps to those of the CLS and S-Class — with homage to the SL's past.

For example, the bold, six-point radiator grille recalls the SLs of the 1960s and '70s, while the power domes in the hood hint at the original 300SL of the 1950s. At the rear, a new aero diffuser beneath the bumper emphasizes the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL's sporting credentials, although its functional benefits are questionable. Some of the detailing, such as the gill-style air intakes in the front fenders, seems a little contrived, but there can be no denying that the new SL now has more visual presence than before.

Mercedes-Benz has officially ended production of its popular CLK Coupe. First launched in the U.S. market in 1997, the CLK was a mish-mash of E-Class styling on the C-Class’s platform, with a price tag slotting between both model lines.

Although the CLK’s name won’t live on, the spirit of the two-door will. Mercedes-Benz is planning on replacing the CLK-Class with a new E-Class coupe later this year. The current CLK will remain on sale until the E-Class coupe rolls into Mercedes dealerships.

Mercedes-Benz will be showing off this concept model at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. Called the ConceptFASCINATION or whatever, it offers a clear preview of the upcoming 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

While the overall shape is just a random design exercise, the front end will appear almost unchanged on the 2010 sedan, except for the grille which will be replaced by a traditional slatted design with a hood ornament. This big-badged grille will, however, still appear in a new E-Class coupe model that will replace the CLK nameplate. Or maybe they will just call it the ELK.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was recently launched in the European market and tuned Brabus has already put together a tuning program for the new Mercedes-Benz sedan.

Besides all the body modifications (which we’re going to skip over and let you read about in the press release after the jump), Brabus is offering a 462-hp upgrade for the 382-hp 6.1L V8 Mercedes-Benz E550. That allows for 0 to 62 mph sprint in just 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 191 mph.

Along with a number of interior upgrades Brabus is also offering 20-inch light-alloy wheels for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. All components are backed by Brabus’s three-year/62,000 miles warranty.

We’re guessing this should you calm and collected until the launch of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

For some drivers, it’s not enough to arrive in a 600-horsepower luxury sedan, they’ve got to make sure that everyone knows it’s a 600-horsepower luxury sedan. For these buyers, the facelifted 2010 Mercedes S63 AMG and S65 AMG are good news. As the flagship sedan has gotten updated for the new year, so has the high-performance version. Details have been leaked by Mercedes’ German online configuration website, which has images of the S63 AMG and S65 AMG ahead of the car’s official Shanghai Auto Show reveal.

The new S-Class AMG models are more distinguished from the standard S-Class, with a larger front air intake below the bumper. The round foglights have been replaced by strips of LED lighting. There are LED taillights as well. The S63 AMG and S65 AMG get individual grilles to distinguish them–though, if you’re good, you’ll be able to tell them apart by the size of the quad exhaust outlets.

Power remains impressive, with the S63 AMG’s 6.2 liter V8 putting out 518 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. AMG’s seven-speed automatic transmission is used. The S65 AMG is the “Big Daddy” of the Mercedes sedan family, with a twin-turbo 6.0 V12 that’s got 604 horses on tap. The S65’s 738 lb-ft. torque rating requires a five-speed automatic to handle the torque, and offers more grunt than the competition from BMW. Mercedes’ ESP stability control does its best to keep these super-sedans docile, though sometimes it’s a losing battle.

As Mercedes-Benz continues to simplify its extended line-up, the new facelifted CL-Class Coupe has been spied winter testing in northern Scandinavia.

Much like the previous CLK-Class Coupe which was absorbed into the E-Class range, the new generation CL-Class will take on the S-Class Coupe moniker when it is released.

Despite its new name, as these images reveal the new model will retain the overall appearance of the current CL-Class Coupe rather than adopting the S-Class face.

New features will include LED daytime running lights and possibly LED tail lamps as well, along with a subtly modified front bumper.

The potent AMG version will naturally take on a more aggressive appearance, promising more power and less consumption from a selection of new engines.

This will be achieved through revised engine management calibrations as well as by reducing the weight of the car with greater use of composite materials.

Here we have our clearest look yet of an almost completely undisguised example of the new generation Mercedes-Benz CLK Coupe.

The new CLK Coupe and Cabriolet is larger and more focussed than its predecessor, closely resembling the new E-Class range rather than the C-Class from which it has been derived.

Current rumours suggest the new generation model will be called the E-Class Coupe rather than the CLK in order to simplifying the current Mercedes-Benz line-up.

The new model has undergone significant refinement to the chassis over the standard C-Class range in order to meet the performance expectations of coupe drivers.

It will however share its engine line-up with the C-Class range, including a flagship V8-powered CLK 500 and obligatory AMG variant.

The CLK Coupe is expected to arrive in showrooms by early 2009 with the Cabriolet model to make its debut a few months later.

We think the computer generated headlights are a big improvement over the current model’s twin bug-eye style and it is likely that Mercedes’ E-class team has been inspired by the current S-Class.

As far as technology goes, lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification (designed for Europe only), road-condition sensors and stability control that accounts for crosswinds, camber changes, and tyre wear are all set to be available.

Powerplants are expected to remain relatively the same with the usual V6 and V8 engines and a range of diesels. Of course the new E63 will retain its enormous 6.3-litre V8.

Mercedes–Benz Launches Ninth Generation E–Class In India

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the ninth generation E-Class sedan, which is retailed at a price of INR4.69 million in Delhi, reported The Hindu Business Line.

Reportedly, the company said that the ninth generation E-Class sedan will be locally assembled and is expected to be offered with a 3.5-litre petrol V6 engine, it can churn out an output of 200 kW with a torque of 355 Nm. It would also feature new parking assistance system and an ‘Attention Assist’ system that detects driver drowsiness, and will consume 6% less fuel.

Wilfried Aulbur, managing director and chief executive officer of Mercedes-Benz India, informed that the company has sold 11,000 units of the E-Class in India till now, of which 6,200 units were the last model. The company has sold 3,625 units in 2008, including 1,142 units of the E-class.

Dr. Aulbur added that the company, in the marketing and after-sales department, seeks to widen to five to ten new cities over the next 12-18 months. Currently, the company operates in 26 locations, with about 45 showrooms. The company is also looking to increase its component exports from Indian units.

This Mercedes-Benz system includes 70 parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, to alert the driver during signs of drowsiness raising the safety levels and prevents accidents. Activated from the speeds of 80 and 180 km/h, reported WheelsUnplugged.

It is no secret that modern cars tend to look similar. Almost all major car manufacturers invest enormous sums of money in designing the front of their cars in order to make their model range look as incisive and as in keeping with brand image as possible. This means that front parts have now become difficult to tell apart - especially with the Mercedes and Audi brands. In this area the discovery of the single frame look was therefore groundbreaking.

In order to give back some uniqueness to the individual models, Adolf Koch - who has worked in the field of tuning for 30 years and should be well known to many insiders - has developed an interesting alternative to the standard front guard. Looking like a long, sleek, low-slung limousine, it is over 17-feet long. But that’s not to say it is out of proportion. Proper overhangs at both ends do their best to not exaggerate the overall length of the S-class. Seventeen feet is a long way from front to back, but it does work well. The sculpted fenders give the impression of muscular “shoulders” that imparts the overall strength of the S550.

Updated headlight lenses flank the recognized Mercedes-Benz grille that helps to anchor the identity of this Benz flagship.
